Wednesday 6 September 2017, 0830-1630 at Canary Wharf
At the heart of every kidnap case is the hostage and his or her family. Seeking the hostage’s release is the undoubted priority of everyone concerned, but while steps are being taken to achieve that, the hostage’s family must endure days, weeks and sometimes years of anxiety, lack of information and unforeseen practical problems. Even when the hostage returns, other issues arise. The former hostage must go through a rehabilitation process, reintegrate into family life and into the workplace. The theme of this year’s seminar is intended to focus minds on the issues around family support and hostage reintegration in a kidnap case. By hearing from various perspectives (that of the hostage, family, employer, mental health and legal experts, government and police) Hostage UK’s seminar is intended to raise awareness of the often less visible issues that underpin kidnap incidents and to promote best practice around family support and hostage reintegration.
The seminar will be chaired by Terry Waite CBE and Lara Symons, President and Director of Hostage UK respectively, and speakers will include representatives from the Anti-Kidnap and Extortion Unit (NCA), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Hostage Crisis Negotiation Unit of the Metropolitan Police, Control Risks, Hogan Lovells, a corporate employer and the mental health profession. There will also be an interview with a former hostage who was held captive in Syria, 2013-2014.
Hostage UK is a charity set up to help families during kidnaps and offer information and guidance to organisations sending employees and contractors to kidnap hotspots. It is running this seminar for organisations to allow them to explore these issues in an informative, informal and confidential setting. The seminar will be subject to Chatham House rules.
There are a maximum of 50 fee paying places for this seminar. Places are £550 each with a special rate of £350 available for public servants and non-governmental organisations.
